Q: Where can I get condoms in Homer? Do I have to be 18 to buy them?

A: Yo! Thanks for asking this question – we’ll start with the second question first. No, you absolutely do not have to be 18 to buy condoms. We have heard that sometimes at stores or pharmacies the clerk will ask for your ID. This is totally unnecessary! You have the right to buy protection for yourself and others at any age.

There are lots of places in Homer to buy condoms, and there are also lots of places to get them for FREE.

Grocery stores like Save-U-More and Safeway carry condoms for purchase. You can also find them at some gas stations around. If you’re looking to buy condoms, check to make sure that they are the size and style that you want before spending your cash.

There are also lots of places around town to get free condoms. The most reliable place to get condoms is always Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic. All you have to do is walk in the front door and ask about the “condom buffet,” which is in the bathroom on the left.  There are also businesses around town that carry free condoms [2025 update: look for them at the Porcupine Theater, Alice’s Champagne Palace, Down East Saloon, the Grog Shop entryway, the Salty Dawg, Grace Ridge Brewery, and Kenai Peninsula College.]

We have also been asked before if there is any difference in the quality of free condoms vs. store-bought. There is none! All condom manufacturers have to pass rigorous testing in order to distribute their condoms to the public.

The other barrier that a lot of people run into is feeling embarrassment, shame, or running into someone you know. This is valid! However, we just want to say that having condoms ready is a sign of taking care of you and a partner’s health – it is saying, “I’m proud to make sure that I am safe and others are safe, too.” Thanks for this question!
